Since the late 19th and early 20th century, jazz as a musical genre has become one of the USA's greatest exports to the world. Rooted in the African-American experience, jazz has attracted listeners from all ethnic groups, nationalities and religions. One of the most exotic things about jazz is that Islam has had a major influence on the development of jazz in African-American communities.

In Richard Brent Turner’s compelling book “Soundtrack to a Movement: African American Islam, Jazz and Black Internationalism”. From thr 40s to 70s, Islam rose to prominence among Black Americans, being shared a common values with jazz music.

In the 50s and 60s, there were Ahmad Jamaal and Yusef Lateef, a jazz legend who converted to Islam and used their Arabic names on stage. There were also the likes of McCoy Tyner, Idris Muhammad and Pharoah Sanders, most of whom converted to Islam in their early years. Many historians believe that there is a strong influence of Islam in their music.
